The Story of Alondwe Ngwenya: A Journey of Hope and Healing
Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal – In the quiet hills of Bergville lives a young boy named Alwande, whose life has been shaped by a rare and severe facial condition. His face developed in a way that is very different from other children, drawing painful stares and questions wherever he went. But behind his condition is a gentle, hopeful child and a mother who refused to give up on her son.
From the beginning, Alwande’s mother did everything she could to find help. She took him to government hospitals, waited in long queues, and pleaded for surgery that could change her child’s life. Each visit ended the same way – with no clear answers, no confirmed surgery date, and no real hope. Still, she kept going, driven by love and faith.
When all doors seemed closed, she reached out to Thuleleni Organisation, a Durban-based community media and support platform known for telling real-life stories and connecting people with help. Thuleleni responded with compassion and urgency, but there was a major challenge: distance and resources. Thuleleni is based in Durban, and without a vehicle or funding for travel, it was impossible for the team to reach Bergville.
The family was told that if they could find a way to travel to Durban, Thuleleni would meet them, hear their story, and try to help. Determined once again, Alwande’s mother arranged transport and hired a car to bring her son to Durban. That journey marked the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.
In Durban, Thuleleni TV welcomed the family and gave them a platform to share their story with the nation. They were hosted on Ukhozi FM’s popular morning show, Vuka Africa Breakfast Show, broadcast from Ezweni Sakhile and presented by Nonhlanhla ‘Mroza’ Buthelezi and Sipho ‘DJ Sgqemeza’ Mbatha. On air, Alwande’s mother spoke bravely about her son’s condition, their struggles, and their plea for medical intervention. Listeners across the country heard her voice – and so did potential partners in the medical field.
Thuleleni called for help, trusting that God would touch the hearts of those who could make a difference. That call was answered. Umhlanga Netcare Private Hospital responded to the plea and committed its doctors and facilities to assist Alwande. Soon after, Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital also joined the effort, partnering with Netcare to provide specialized care. Under the leadership of experienced specialist Dr. Maldare, a surgical plan was put in place to help reshape Alwande’s face and restore his dignity.
At last, the day of the first surgery arrived. With the support of the medical teams from Umhlanga Netcare Private Hospital and Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, and under the skilled hands of Dr Maldare, the operation was carried out. The surgery was a success. For the first time, there was visible change – not only in Alwande’s face, but in his confidence and his mother’s hope.
Today, Alwande continues his journey of healing. His second surgery was scheduled for 24 June 2026 at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital. Thuleleni remains by his side, committed to walking this road with him and his family until the very end. His story is no longer just about pain and struggle – it is about faith, community and the power of people coming together.
