Betrayal at Home: A Woman’s Fight to Rebuild Her Life
For years, a woman from Hammarsdale (Nokubonga Madondo) believed she had built a stable life with her husband. He worked as a terminal manager, earning a good salary, and together they built a home, raised children, and tried to support their extended families. Behind the scenes, however, her marriage was slowly breaking apart.
The couple met in 2006 while she was in matric. Lobola negotiations began the following year, and they married in March 2011. They later lived in Mossel Bay for two years. Her husband’s parents had both passed away, and he carried the weight of a brother struggling with drug addiction. Despite these challenges, she tried to build a loving home. She studied to become a paramedic in 2013 and helped care for his children from previous relationships, even when it was emotionally difficult.
Over time, serious tensions grew within the family. There were painful conflicts involving her siblings, money, and trust. Her relationship with her mother became strained after disagreements about how to handle a serious allegation within the family. Community members began to question her marriage, especially after the couple bought a house in Pinetown. Her sister started visiting often, sometimes uninvited, and arguments between the two sisters became frequent. She believed that spiritual interference and jealousy were affecting her home and her peace of mind.
In 2020, her husband bought her a car in cash, an Audi A4. Instead of bringing joy, the gift seemed to deepen tensions. Her sister was unhappy about the purchase, and the atmosphere at home grew even more hostile. The following year, everything collapsed.
On 29 November 2021, her husband told her he was going to pay a stokvel contribution. When she came home from work that afternoon, she found the house almost empty. He had taken his clothes and left without a word. It was not the first time he disappeared when he had money, but this time it was final. Soon, she began hearing rumours that he was involved with her own sister. People said they had seen them together, even checking into a hotel. When she later saw call records on her sister’s phone, her worst fears were confirmed.
