A Family's Plea for Compassion: A Mother Battling Fibroids Faces an Even Greater Struggle
There are moments during our community outreach journeys that remind us just how much pain and hardship many families are carrying in silence. Behind every smile, there may be a story of illness, financial hardship, and the daily struggle to provide for loved ones.
Yesterday, while discussing our planned outreach trip to eNdwedwe with Dr. Khoza, the conversation turned to a woman we had previously visited who is currently receiving support for her fibroid condition. Since our route would take us through Verulam, we mentioned that, if time allowed, we would like to stop by her home to see how she was progressing and to check on her wellbeing.Without hesitation, Dr. Khoza encouraged us to visit her.
However, he also reminded us that a visit should be about more than simply checking on her health. He suggested that we buy a few groceries before arriving so that we could provide practical support to the family, spend time asking how they were coping, and then continue with the rest of our journey.
As we spoke with the woman, we discovered that her greatest challenge at the moment was not only her health. She shared that there was no food in the house, and the lack of proper nutrition had left her feeling weak and exhausted. It was a painful reminder that many families battling illness are also fighting poverty, making their circumstances even more difficult.
For a person living with a chronic health condition, having access to nutritious food is incredibly important. Yet, for many households, simply putting a meal on the table has become a daily struggle.

Stories like hers remind us that healing often requires more than medical care alone. Emotional support, community compassion, and practical assistance can make a significant difference in helping families through their most difficult seasons.
