From Acid Attack Survivor to Advocate: The Story of Phakamani Sibiya
Towards the end of 2023, Thuleleni Organisation met a young man named Phakamani Sibiya. He arrived not only as a victim of a brutal crime, but as a survivor searching for justice. In 2022, his ex-girlfriend attacked him with acid, leaving his body – especially his face – severely burned and his life changed forever.
Thanks to the swift response of the Department of Health and the dedication of doctors and nurses, Phakamani survived the attack. Their tireless work in the early stages saved his life. But while his physical wounds were being treated, another battle had stalled: the fight for justice. Although a police case had been opened, no arrest had been made and there was no visible progress. This is what led Phakamani to knock on Thuleleni’s door.
Thuleleni Organisation took his case into its programme of action. The team immediately reached out to key partners and professionals to support him. The Themba Njilo Foundation came on board, along with occupational therapist Dr December Mpanza, who focused on helping Phakamani cope mentally and emotionally with the trauma. Social worker Miss Nokwanda Ndevu, who practises privately but volunteers her skills to assist Thuleleni, also joined the support network around him.
While these stakeholders worked closely with Phakamani on his mental and emotional healing, Thuleleni engaged directly with the police and the Verulam Magistrate’s Court to demand progress on his case. Their involvement helped push the matter forward. Authorities began to treat the case with the seriousness it deserved. An arrest was finally made, and the court process moved ahead.
In the end, justice was served. The perpetrator was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years behind bars. For Phakamani, this was not only a legal victory, but a step towards emotional closure and the rebuilding of his life. Today, he is no longer just a client of Thuleleni Organisation. He has become a brother, an ambassador and a powerful voice for others who have suffered like him. As part of the Thuleleni team, he now helps people who are also seeking justice, turning his pain into purpose and his survival into hope for others.
