Andile Mbhele’s Search for His Biological Father: A Journey of Identity, Faith and Family

A lifetime of unanswered questions has led one KwaZulu-Natal man on a deeply personal search for the family he never knew.
For many people, a surname is simply a name passed down from one generation to another. For Andile Mbhele, however, his surname has become part of a much deeper story — one involving identity, family, unanswered questions and a search for his biological roots.
Andile grew up carrying the surname Mbhele, believing that this was his family identity. Mbhele was the man who raised him, and Andile acknowledges the important role he played in his upbringing. However, as he grew older, Andile discovered that the man who raised him was not his biological father.
His mother, Nelly Sithole, is originally from Umlazi, Q Section. According to Andile, his biological father was a Coloured man from Cape Town, but he was never given the opportunity to properly know or build a relationship with him.
Today, Andile is searching for that missing part of his family history.
A Life Marked by Challenges
Andile's journey has not been an easy one.
He enrolled at UNISA, where he studied a course related to Agriculture, but financial difficulties eventually forced him to stop his studies before completing the course.
Like many people trying to build a better future, Andile continued searching for opportunities. He took on several jobs, but those opportunities eventually came to an end.
He later found employment as a truck driver, and during a period when life seemed to be moving in a better direction, he managed to purchase land in KwaZulu-Natal.
But once again, circumstances changed.
Andile lost his truck-driving job, and the financial pressure began to increase. The stability he had worked so hard to build started slipping away.
A Difficult Period in His Life
During one particularly difficult period, Andile says he experienced a series of events that left him deeply troubled.
One night, he struggled to sleep. He eventually woke up sweating and says he discovered that ants were all over him.
As a man who strongly believes in God, Andile turned to prayer.
He says his faith became an important source of strength as he tried to make sense of what was happening in his life.
On another occasion, a friend lent him a car to help him look for employment. Unfortunately, the vehicle was involved in an accident.
As setbacks continued to occur, Andile began feeling as though everything he tried to do was somehow ending badly.
For Andile, these experiences became part of a much bigger personal journey — one in which he began reflecting more deeply on his life, his identity and where he came from.
The Father He Never Got to Know
At some point, Andile was informed that his biological father had passed away.
What he knows is that his biological father was a Coloured man from Cape Town who reportedly worked for a company called SA Canopy.
Searching for More Than Himself
Andile is now a father himself. He has three children — two with one woman and one with another. His search for his biological family is therefore not only about discovering where he comes from.
It is also about his children.Andile wants his children to know the family they come from and to have an opportunity to understand their biological heritage.
For him, discovering his father's family could mean giving his children something that he never had — a connection to the other side of their family tree.
“I want my children to know where they come from and to know the family of their grandfather.”
His search is therefore about more than a surname or a missing piece of information.
It is about belonging, identity and legacy.
A Search That Continues
Despite the difficulties he has experienced throughout his life, Andile is currently employed and continues to move forward.
His circumstances have changed many times, but his desire to find his biological family has remained.
He believes that somewhere in Cape Town or elsewhere in South Africa, there may be people who know his biological father or recognise the story he is telling.
Even a small piece of information could potentially help connect the missing pieces of his family history.
Perhaps someone remembers a man from Cape Town who worked for SA Canopy.
Perhaps someone remembers a worker who regularly drove deliveries from Cape Town.
Perhaps there are relatives who have always known that he existed but never knew what happened to him.
Or perhaps there is someone reading this who can recognise the names, places and circumstances described in Andile's story.

Sometimes a person's greatest search is not for money, success or possessions.
Sometimes it is simply the search to answer one question:
“Where do I come from?”
For Andile Mbhele, that search continues — not only for himself, but for the children who carry his story into the next generation.
And perhaps somewhere in Cape Town, there is a family waiting to discover that they have been missing a son, a brother, an uncle or a relative all along.
