Zanele Mdletshe’s Journey to Regain Her Dignity and Seek Justice

From Nqutu, KwaZulu-Natal, to Johannesburg, Gauteng, Zanele Mdletshe is continuing to speak out about an experience she says has deeply affected her life, her career and her dignity.

Zanele Mdletshe, originally from Nqutu in KwaZulu-Natal and currently living in Johannesburg, Gauteng, says she has been fighting for justice following a distressing incident involving a security search at the airport where she worked.

According to Zanele, she was subjected to a search during which she was forced to strip completely naked. She says the experience happened on three separate occasions and left her deeply traumatised.

Following the incidents, Zanele says she found it increasingly difficult to continue working. The emotional impact of what she had experienced affected her ability to perform her duties, and she eventually lost her job.

A Search for Answers

Zanele says she reported the matter to the police, but believes that the response to her complaint has not been satisfactory. She says investigators have requested reports, emails and other information as part of the investigation.

She also says that the individuals she identifies as being involved in the incident have not been located, and that she has not seen them since the events took place.

Zanele believes that the airport's management has the ability to help resolve the matter. However, she says that the issue remains unresolved. She has also raised concerns about what she believes may be a relationship between management and the individuals involved. These are her suspicions, and she says she wants the relevant authorities to properly investigate the circumstances and establish the facts.

A Difficult Legal Journey

In her efforts to seek justice, Zanele says she approached lawyers for assistance. However, she says that despite paying for legal services, she repeatedly felt that she was not receiving the help she needed.

She has since stopped communicating with the lawyers she previously approached and says she is looking for a strong and committed legal representative who can properly assist her with the matter.

Zanele's legal journey has also included proceedings before the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), where she says she won her case.

Despite this outcome, she says her broader struggle for accountability and restoration of her dignity is not yet over.

The Emotional Toll

The experience has taken a significant emotional toll on Zanele. She says that, at her lowest point, the situation became so overwhelming that she considered taking her own life.

Her experience, she says, demonstrates how deeply traumatic incidents can affect a person's emotional wellbeing, employment and sense of dignity long after the incident itself has taken place.

Zanele says she is now determined to continue seeking appropriate legal and institutional assistance and to have her concerns properly addressed.

Speaking Out Despite Criticism

Zanele has also faced criticism from people connected to her former workplace. She says that some individuals have made hurtful comments about her decision to speak publicly about her experience, including accusing her of seeking attention and questioning why she has chosen to tell her story publicly.

Despite these comments, Zanele says she believes that speaking about what happened is part of her journey towards reclaiming her dignity and seeking accountability.

She also acknowledges that not everyone she has approached for assistance has been willing to come forward or support her publicly. She says this has made an already difficult situation even more challenging.

Gratitude to Those Who Have Supported Her

Throughout her journey, Zanele says she has received support from members of the public, particularly people who have engaged with her story on social media.

She would like to express her sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported, encouraged and stood with her during this difficult period.

Zanele says she intends to respond directly to people who have contacted her through social media and has indicated that she will communicate with them via their inboxes.

At this stage, she says she has not submitted a complaint to the Public Protector regarding the matter.

A Call for Justice and Restoration

For Zanele, this is about more than a workplace dispute. She says it is about restoring the dignity she feels was taken from her and ensuring that her experience is properly heard and investigated.

Her message is one of persistence: despite the setbacks she has experienced with the police, legal representatives and other avenues of assistance, she continues to search for a path towards justice.

Zanele says what she ultimately wants is an opportunity to regain her dignity, receive appropriate legal assistance and see the circumstances surrounding her experience properly addressed.

Her story remains an ongoing one, and she hopes that the right legal and institutional support will eventually help her move forward.
